In a business world that keeps changing, a clear understanding of your business model is the key to success. One of the most effective tools for getting there is the Business Model Canvas (BMC).
Why Does the Business Model Canvas Matter?
The BMC helps entrepreneurs design, explain, and develop a business model in a simple, visual way. With it, we can understand and manage the key aspects of our business better. Since Alexander Osterwalder introduced it in his 2005 book “Business Model Generation”, the BMC has been adopted by many companies, from startups to giants such as Amazon and Toyota.
Steps to Building a Business Model Canvas
Let’s go through the steps for building a BMC and the tools you need at each stage:
- Identify Your Customer Segments Decide who your target customers are and what they need. Tool: Use the BMC template to visualise your target customers.
- Create a Value Proposition What benefit do you offer customers? Why should they choose you? Tool: Fill in the “Value Proposition” block of the BMC template with the benefits you offer.
- Define Your Distribution Channels Which channels will you use to deliver your value proposition to customers? Tool: Fill in the “Channels” block of the BMC template with the channels you pick.
- Define Customer Relationships What kind of relationship do you want to build with customers? Tool: Fill in the “Customer Relationship” block of the BMC template with the relationship you want.
- Define Your Revenue Streams Where does your revenue come from? Tool: Fill in the “Revenue Streams” block of the BMC template with your revenue sources.
- Define Key Resources What resources does it take to run your business? Tool: Fill in the “Key Resources” block of the BMC template with the resources you need.
